Storage Unit Rental: What to Check Before Signing
Storage unit needs typically arise during a stressful transition — a move, a renovation, a downsizing decision — which makes it easy to skip due diligence that would otherwise be obvious. Climate control matters significantly for anything sensitive to temperature or humidity, including electronics, wooden furniture, and important documents, and this feature typically comes at a higher price that is worth paying for the right items. Security features deserve direct questions too — ask specifically about individual unit alarms, on-site staff presence, and camera coverage, rather than assuming a facility is secure based on appearance alone. Access hours vary between facilities, and this matters more than expected for anyone who might need items outside standard business hours, particularly during an active move. Insurance coverage should be clarified explicitly, since many facilities offer only limited liability coverage by default, leaving valuable items underinsured unless additional coverage is purchased separately. Reading the contract for automatic rate increases is also worth the few minutes it takes, since many facilities offer a low introductory rate that increases significantly after the first few months.
